Nespresso transforms Coffee Pods in Cameras

Thanks to the recycling of aluminum, Nespresso capsules can be transformed into “pinhole” cameras. With these almost rudimentary Ecocameras, three exceptional photographers captured images from Portugal.

Coffee pods are having a huge impact in Nature. Their components are almost non-recyclable and despite the fact that is much easier for us, coffee drinkers, to have it that way, we must think of the effect they may have in the environment. We have already spoken about it in this article on coffee pods.

That’s why many coffee pods producers are trying to minimize their environment impact start to recycle them. Nespresso was one of the first to do it, so now they have a whole new project: transforming coffee pods into Pinhole Cameras.

How did it work?
This is a Nespresso project that re-uses the aluminum casing of the brand’s coffee capsules. In what new life does the material become? In the main component of the Ecocamera, a pinhole camera, entirely analog. That is, it has no lens and has minimal input of light, almost as in the beginning of photography.

Photographers António Homem Cardoso, Armando Bento and Joel Santos were challenged by Nespresso to photograph Ecomera landscapes and places that the three of them would like to find if they returned to Earth in 200 years. That is, in the XXIII century. A kind of journey through the present with the goal of leaving a legacy for the future.

The choices were varied and they report a sample of a Portugal loaded with History in symbiosis with characteristic pieces of Nature.

«It was a very nice challenge, practically how to get back to almost zero of the photograph», as António Homem Cardoso described, who with his “pinhole” essentially looked for portraits of “a sense of portugality”.

So cool when coffee is transformed into art. Hope other companies see this example and start recycling also, right? What do you think?
